High-Speed Wireless: How to Share Large Files from Android to iPhone via WiFi

WiFi is the fastest practical way to transfer large files between phones — far faster than Bluetooth, which crawls at 2 Mbps, and much more reliable than mobile data. If you have a 2GB 4K video or a huge ZIP archive, WiFi is your only real option. However, "WiFi transfer" can mean two different things: transferring over your local home/office network or using your WiFi-connected internet. Here is how to maximize speed in both cases.

Scenario A: Same WiFi Network (Local High-Speed)

If the Android and iPhone are both connected to the same WiFi router — same home, same office — local network transfer completely bypasses the internet. Your file never leaves the building. Transfer speeds are limited only by your router and the WiFi standard both phones support.

Realistic speeds:

  • WiFi 5 (802.11ac) network: 100–300 Mbps real-world throughput between devices
  • WiFi 6 (802.11ax) network: 300–600 Mbps between compatible devices
  • Older WiFi 4 (802.11n): 30–80 Mbps

At 200 Mbps, a 1GB video transfers in about 40 seconds. That's roughly 15–20x faster than uploading to a cloud service and downloading again.

Tap the other device's icon to initiate transfer. Select your file. Transfer happens entirely over the local network — nothing goes to the internet. For large files this is the fastest method available without a USB cable.

PairDrop is open source (you can inspect the code) and can also be self-hosted if you want complete control. It's available at pairdrop.net operated by the community.

Alternative: LocalSend (Native App)

LocalSend is a free, open-source app (Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux) that does the same job as PairDrop but as a native app rather than a browser tab. Native apps can access higher-priority network threads, which translates to faster throughput in practice — LocalSend consistently achieves 200–400 Mbps on WiFi 5 networks, noticeably faster than the browser-based tools. The trade-off is that both devices need the app installed. For recurring same-network transfers between the same devices, LocalSend is the faster option. For a one-off transfer to someone else's phone, PairDrop wins because it requires nothing.

What If Devices Don't Find Each Other on PairDrop?

mDNS discovery (how PairDrop finds devices) occasionally fails when the router isolates clients from each other — a common setting on guest WiFi networks and some public WiFi setups. If both devices are on the same network but PairDrop shows nothing: check that both are on the same WiFi band (2.4GHz vs 5GHz can sometimes isolate devices on dual-band routers), try refreshing the page on both devices, or switch to Zapfile for an internet-routed transfer instead.

Mobile Hotspot as a "Same Network" Option

When you're out of the house and both phones are on mobile data, you can still get local-network speeds by creating a mobile hotspot. One phone creates a hotspot, the other connects to it — now both are on the same local network and PairDrop or LocalSend works at full local speed. The data transferred travels over the hotspot's WiFi radio between the phones, not over the mobile network. This is especially useful for transferring large files at events, in cars, or anywhere without shared WiFi.

Scenario B: Different Networks (Standard Internet Transfer)

When the Android and iPhone are on different networks — different locations, one on WiFi and one on mobile data — the transfer routes through the internet. Speed depends on both connections' upload and download speeds, and the tool you use.
