Frequently Asked Questions
🚀 Getting Started
Q: How do I send a file?
It's super simple:
- Go to zapfile.ai
- Select your file(s) or folder
- Click "Create Room & Send"
- Share the room code with your recipient
- They enter the code and the transfer starts automatically
Q: Do I need to create an account?
Nope! ZapFile works completely without any signup or registration. Just open the site and start transferring.
Q: Does it work on mobile devices?
Yes! ZapFile works on any device with a modern browser - phones, tablets, laptops, desktops. You can transfer files between any combination of devices.
🔒 Privacy & Security
Q: Are my files stored on your servers?
No, never. Files are transferred directly between devices using peer-to-peer technology. They never touch our servers. We literally cannot see or store your files.
Q: Is the transfer encrypted?
Yes! All transfers are end-to-end encrypted using WebRTC's built-in encryption (DTLS-SRTP). Only you and your recipient can see the files.
Q: Can ZapFile employees see my files?
No. Since files are transferred directly between devices and encrypted, we have no way to see what you're sharing. We only facilitate the connection between devices.
Q: What data do you collect?
We collect minimal analytics to improve the service (things like "how many transfers succeeded" and "what browsers people use"). We don't track individual users or see file contents. Check our Privacy Policy for full details.
📁 File Transfers
Q: What's the maximum file size?
There is no file size limit! Since we don't store files, you can transfer files of any size. The only limit is your patience and connection stability.
Q: How fast is the transfer?
Transfers happen at the full speed of your internet connection because it's peer-to-peer. No server bottlenecks. The actual speed depends on both devices' upload/download speeds and internet connection quality.
Q: Can I send multiple files at once?
Yes! Use the "Multiple Files" tab to select multiple files or even entire folders. They'll all be transferred together.
Q: How long does the room code stay active?
Room codes expire after 24 hours of inactivity. Both sender and receiver need to be connected at the same time for the transfer to work.
Q: What happens if the connection drops during transfer?
Currently, you'll need to start over. However, we're working on resume functionality so you can pick up where you left off if the connection drops.
🛠️ Troubleshooting
Q: The transfer isn't starting. What do I do?
Try these steps:
- Make sure both devices are connected to the internet
- Refresh the page and create a new room
- Check if you're behind a strict firewall or VPN
- Try a different browser
- If you're on a corporate network, it might block P2P connections
Q: The room code doesn't work. Why?
Common reasons:
- Room codes are case-sensitive - make sure it's entered exactly
- The sender might have closed the page
- The room code might have expired (24 hours)
- Try creating a new room
Q: Which browsers are supported?
ZapFile works on all modern browsers that support WebRTC:
- Chrome/Edge (version 80+)
- Firefox (version 75+)
- Safari (version 14+)
- Opera (version 67+)
- Mobile browsers (Chrome, Safari, Samsung Internet)
Q: Does it work behind a firewall?
Usually yes, but some strict corporate or school firewalls might block P2P connections. If that's the case, try using a personal device on a different network.
💰 Pricing & Limits
Q: How much does ZapFile cost?
ZapFile is completely free. No hidden costs, no premium tiers, no file size limits, no transfer limits.
Q: Will it stay free?
Yes! Since we don't store files, our costs are minimal. The free version will always exist. If we add premium features in the future, they'll be optional extras.
Q: How many files can I transfer per day?
There's no limit! Transfer as many files as you want, as often as you want.
🌟 Features & Future Plans
Q: Can I password-protect my transfers?
Not yet, but it's on our roadmap! For now, the room code acts as a basic password - only someone with the code can access the transfer.
Q: Will you add resume functionality?
Yes! This is our top priority. We're working on letting you resume interrupted transfers without starting over.
Q: Can I see my transfer history?
Not currently, but we're planning to add a local transfer history stored only on your device.
Q: Is there an API?
Not yet, but we're considering it. If you're interested in integrating ZapFile into your app or service, email us at [email protected]
