The problem with the way we share files today

Most people share files the same way they did a decade ago — attaching them to an email, uploading to Google Drive, or fumbling through a Dropbox link. These methods work, but they all share the same fundamental flaw: your file ends up on a server you don't control, stored by a company whose business model may or may not align with your privacy interests.

Email attachments cap out at around 25 MB — barely enough for a handful of photos, let alone a video, a design file, or a project folder. Cloud storage services raise that ceiling, but only if you have an account, accept their terms, and trust that your files won't be scanned, indexed, or used to train machine learning models. Many major cloud providers openly state in their terms of service that uploaded content may be analysed for various purposes.

Beyond privacy, there's the sheer friction. Creating an account, verifying an email, granting folder permissions, generating a shareable link — all before the other person can even start downloading. And they often need an account too. For something as simple as handing someone a file, the process has become absurdly complicated.

Zapfile was built to remove all of that. Open your browser, pick your file, share a 5-digit code. The recipient opens their browser, types the code, and downloads. No accounts on either end. No size limits. No file sitting in a cloud server indefinitely. The transfer happens, the file is purged, and that's the end of it.

Why people choose Zapfile

Every decision in how Zapfile works was made to give you speed, privacy, and simplicity — without making you trade one for another.

Lightning-Fast Transfers

Files transfer at full network speed with no artificial throttling or queuing. Our optimized infrastructure ensures your files move as fast as your connection allows, without the bottlenecks common in traditional cloud storage services.

Encrypted Throughout

Every transfer is protected with TLS encryption in transit and AES-256 encryption at rest. Your files cannot be read by anyone without the transfer code — not by third parties, and not by us. Encryption is applied automatically, not as a premium feature.

No Permanent Storage

Files are automatically and permanently purged the moment the transfer completes. Nothing is retained, archived, or linked back to your identity. There is no database of your transfers, no history, and no data to breach after the fact.

No Login Required

There is no account system in Zapfile — not even an optional one. We don't ask for your email address, name, or any personal information. You don't need to remember a password or verify anything. Open the site and you're ready.

Works on Every Device

Zapfile runs in any modern browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge — on any device. Android to iPhone, Windows laptop to Mac, desktop to tablet. No compatibility headaches, no platform restrictions, no OS-specific limitations.

No App to Download

Installing an app means granting permissions, using storage space, and trusting an update process. Zapfile runs entirely in your browser tab with no installation, no updates to manage, and no background processes running on your device.

How Zapfile works

Four steps. No accounts on either end. No size limits. Works from any browser on any device.

1

Select your files — any type, any size

Drag and drop files or folders onto the page, or click Browse to pick them from your device. There is no file size restriction — whether you're sending a 500 KB document or a 50 GB video project, Zapfile handles it. Large files are automatically split into chunks and uploaded in parallel so the process is as fast as your connection allows.

2

Get a 5-digit transfer code

Once your files are ready, Zapfile generates a short, unique 5-digit code — something like AB3D7. This code is cryptographically random and specific to your transfer. Share it with your recipient however you like: send it in a text message, read it out loud, paste it into an email, or let Zapfile generate a QR code for in-person handoffs.

3

Recipient enters the code — no account needed

The recipient opens Zapfile in any browser and types in the 5-digit code. Their download starts immediately — no login prompt, no sign-up form, no app to install. It works the same on a phone, a tablet, a laptop, or a desktop, regardless of operating system or browser.

4

Transfer completes — file is purged automatically

Once the download finishes, the file is automatically and permanently deleted. You don't need to remember to clean up, and there's no risk of the file sitting in cloud storage indefinitely. The transfer code also becomes invalid, so the same code cannot be used again by anyone else.

Zapfile vs. traditional file sharing

Email attachments cap out at 25 MB. Cloud storage requires an account and keeps your files indefinitely. Bluetooth only works at close range. Zapfile removes all of those constraints.

Built for every kind of transfer

From a quick document handoff to a multi-gigabyte project delivery, Zapfile handles every scenario without asking you to compromise on speed, privacy, or simplicity.

Professionals & Teams

Send contracts, proposals, and large project files to clients without hitting email attachment limits or setting up shared drive permissions. Zapfile transfers are private by design — the file doesn't sit in a third-party cloud after delivery, so there's no risk of unintended access down the line. Ideal for legal documents, financial reports, and any file you wouldn't want stored indefinitely on someone else's servers.

Content Creators

Photographers, videographers, and designers regularly deal with files that are simply too large for conventional sharing methods. Raw photo shoots, 4K video rushes, and layered design files can easily exceed 10–50 GB. Zapfile handles these without compression, quality loss, or artificial caps — and without requiring your client to create an account just to receive the delivery.

Students & Educators

Sharing lecture recordings, research datasets, project files, or group assignment submissions is a daily need in education. Zapfile works on any device — campus computers, personal phones, tablets — without needing IT approval or institutional accounts. Students and teachers can exchange files cross-platform instantly, whether they're in the same room or different countries.

Friends & Family

Not everyone is comfortable navigating cloud storage UIs or creating new accounts just to receive a photo album. Zapfile is designed to be as simple as possible for the person receiving: they type a short code and the download starts. No prompts, no sign-ups, no confusion — even for people who aren't particularly tech-savvy.

Any file type. Any size.

Zapfile does not restrict, compress, or convert your files. Whatever format you need to send, it goes through exactly as-is — full quality, original format, complete integrity.

Why file privacy matters more than most people realise

When you email a file or upload it to cloud storage, you are creating a copy of that file that exists independently of your device — stored on infrastructure you don't control, subject to policies that can change, and potentially accessible to employees, contractors, or systems with access to that storage. Most people accept this without thinking about it because the alternatives have historically been inconvenient.

The privacy implication isn't theoretical. Cloud storage providers have faced breaches, insider access incidents, and government data requests. Email providers scan attachments for various purposes. The moment a file leaves your device and lands on a third-party server, your control over it is significantly reduced.

Zapfile approaches this differently. Files are encrypted in transit using TLS and at rest using AES-256 — the same standards used by financial institutions and government agencies. More importantly, files are automatically purged after the transfer completes. There is no long-term copy sitting on a server somewhere. There is no account linking the transfer to your identity. The best protection against a data breach is having no data to breach.

For sensitive files — medical records, legal documents, financial statements, personal photographs — the difference between a service that retains your files and one that doesn't is significant. Zapfile was built on the principle that the right default is no retention, not opt-in deletion.
